Catherine Hewgill, a homeowner on 22nd Avenue, was all smiles.

Her home, as are many others in the area known as Ebenezer Flats, is on an evacuation alert.

Water has been steadily creeping up past its bank due to a higher-than-average snowpack and a delayed spring melt. The 28 millimetres of precipitation recorded on Tuesday didn't help the situation, with more rain, followed by warming conditions on Wednesday.

This is her first experience with flooding, as she just purchased her home last summer, but thanks to Joe Galvin and Bev Storey at Smithers Secondary School, who brought with them a sandbagging army of 18 students, her home is lined with sandbags, should the water reach that far.

That was at 10 a.m. May 18, and after lunch another SSS crew was expected to drop in to help her neighbours as well.
