Hi, my name is Josh Casey. I’m from Lindsay, Ontario, which is about an hour-and-a-half southwest of Toronto. I’ve lived there most of my life, except when I went to college in London, Ontario to study broadcast journalism.

It was in London where I found my passion for storytelling and the ability to finally put to use the natural curiosity that I’ve always had.

Some interesting facts about me are; I’m a vegetarian and have been since 2003. My favourite food is pizza with jalapeño peppers and onions. My favourite colour is florescent green and I own half a dozen pairs of shoes that colour coordinate with almost everything. I’m a self proclaimed coffee snob and foodie. I enjoy all types of music including EDM.

I enjoy jogging through Telkwa every morning before heading into the office and tuning in to the news while drinking my morning coffee.

In my volunteer life, I’ve been heavily involved in lacrosse; from being a timekeeper, occasional coach, house league coordinator and vice president. It’s believed that I’m the youngest person to take on the role of vp, at 17. The irony of it all is, I’ve never played the sport competitively or any other sport for that matter. Watching my younger brother play gave me the idea of, “hey I want to timekeep his game!” So that’s what I did, then began being promoted over the years. I was with the association for six years in total.

The question I’ve been asked most since arriving here in Smithers is “why Smithers?” For me the answer is threefold.

As journalists, we anticipate that we’ll have to move from our hometown, which often means moving across the country to take a job. The other reason is to travel and learn about different cultures. Lastly, to join a paper with a good and well-established history in its community and to see the famous sidewalk to nowhere.

The best part of my job is meeting you in the community and helping to tell your stories while I learn about the community and its culture.

When I first arrived in Smithers, I took a walk around town and nearly every person I saw greeted me with “morning.” It was so nice to hear, having been in town for literally only minutes. Thank you for welcoming me to your community and I’m excited to call Smithers home.
