Walter CHERNOWAS

Walter Chernowas, 100, of Smithers BC, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and great great grandfather went into the presence of his Lord on June 10, 2016. Walter died peacefully at the Bulkley Lodge 10 days short of his 101st birthday. He was born on June 23, 1915 in the Municipality of Mossey River, Manitoba to Michael Chernowas and Anna Blok. He grew up in a farming community near Fork River, Manitoba, completed grade 2 and then helped support his family at a very young age. He helped build his family home at the age of 13. During his life he worked as a carpenter, farmer, logger and then worked with the Highways Department in Kamloops, retiring in 1980. He enjoyed gardening, walking, baking, and keeping busy even into his 100th year.

Walter is survived by his wife Mary; daughters Helen Tahara, Elizabeth Grant (Terry), Florence Wojak (Len Snider) and son Earl Chernowas (Audrey); 11 grand children, 13 great grandchildren and 1 great, great grandchild and many other family and friends. Walter built his life around his family, friends and church community. His love, strength and care will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held on June 16th at 2:00 pm in the Mountain View Assembly Church at 2701 Upper Viewmount Road, in Smithers. If so desired, memorial donations in Walter’s name can be made to the Cancer Care Team at PO Box 3776, Smithers BC, V0J 2N0.
