Strgar, Vinko (Vince)

July 1, 1930 to Oct. 30, 2008

Vinko passed away in his home in Smithers, B.C. from complications due to kidney failure.

Born in the village of Gorjusé in Slovenia, Vinko grew up working on the family farm in Gorjusé. Then, after surviving German occupation during World War II, he emigrated to Canada in 1955. First working in Toronto for a short time, then working for the Town of Kitimat when it was under construction. He then moved to Smithers, where he married his wife Zora, and worked in the forest industry. Later working in construction as a bricklayer and stonemason for Northern Masonry. He worked on many of the buildings in Smithers and outlying areas. Then, after overseeing construction of the Northwest Panelboard Plant, now (Northern Engineered Wood Products) in 1980, worked there until his retirement in 1996. Vinko enjoyed hunting and fishing and was an avid reader of world history and politics.

He is survived by his wife Zora of 47 years, sons Vincent and Robert, sister Terezija (Slovenia), brothers Franc (Arizona), Ciril, Valentin, and Vinko (Slovenia) and many relatives in Slovenia. He is predeceased by his father Vinko, mother Margaret, brothers Ivan and Miro.

The family would like to thank Dr. Pretorius, the Renal Clinic in Prince George, the nurses at B.V. District Hospital, the Palliative home care workers, and the B.V. Hospice Society.

Service was held at the R.A. Schrader Funeral Home Nov. 3, 2008.
