LEONARD GARNER

September 8, 1924 – March 24, 2015

Len passed away suddenly and peacefully at the Bulkley Lodge on Tuesday, March 24, 2015.

Len was born in Lowton, England to Caroline and Thomas Garner. The family immigrated to Canada in 1927 and settled in Dunster BC. He was the youngest of four children, staying on the farm until he was 16, then he moved to Prince Rupert to live with his sister and brother-in-law.

After a stint working in a coal mine in Alberta, he went back to Prince Rupert where he met the love of his life, Mary. Shortly after, he enlisted in the army. He and Mary were married in Manitoba in 1945 while Len was on leave. He then returned to the army waiting to be shipped overseas only to be discharged as the war had ended. The couple settled in Prince Rupert and in 1946 Bill was born. Then in 1952, Len hired on with the CNR and the family moved to Smithers where Sandy was born in 1955.

Len was pre-deceased by his wife Mary in 2004. He is survived by his son Bill (Dorothy) and daughter Sandy (Doug) Morris; grandchildren Rick (Liz) Garner, Tara Caffelle, Brent (Kylie) Morris, Julie (Landon) Klassen; great grandchildren Jack and Anna Garner, Sydney and Lauryn Morris, Hudson, Peyton and Keaton Klassen. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank Dr. J. Preto and all the staff of the Bulkley Lodge for the care and kindness shown to Dad and our family over the past 4 years.

A Memorial Service will be held in the Smithers United Church on April 11th at 1:00 pm with a tea to follow in the Pioneer Place Activity Centre. Memorial donations in Len’s name would be appreciated to the Bulkley Lodge Recreation Fund at PO Box 360, Smithers, BC, V0J 2N0.
