Grieder, John (Hans) passed away April 7, 2008 in the Bulkley Lodge in Smithers, B.C. at the age of 91 years.

John was born on Nov. 24, 1916 in Basel, Switzerland to Karl and Maria. He was raised and educated there along with his brother Karl. He met and married Margarit in February 1948.

They traveled to Canada in April of 1948 and arrived in Smithers on May 8, 1948. In August of that year they bought the farm that he lived on until his passing. He worked for J.J. Herman and at Fritz Gyger’s sawmill and also at the Experimental Farm to raise money until he was able to farm full time. After dairy farming, he tried cattle until his retirement. Margarit passed away suddenly in January 1994.

“It was tough sometimes, but I’m happy about it. We always made it, somehow, with God’s help.”

John is survived by his loving family, Vreni, who still lives on the farm along with Jan. Mary lives in Switzerland and son Dan lives in Nova Scotia. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, along with nieces, nephews and a host of best friends.

There was a services of remembrance for John on April 14 at 1 p.m. in the Mountain View Assembly Church with Pastor M. Wittke officiating. If friends so desire, memorial tributes to a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.

Cremation was requested. Arrangements were entrusted to the R.A. Schrader Funeral Home, Smithers, B.C.
