Douglas William Bateson passed away peacefully on September 8, 2015 at the BVDH. He is survived by his children Victor (Ann) Bateson, Don Bateson, Lynn (Ralph) Johnston and Ken Bateson and his sister Irene (Bill) Fowler. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren, and 28 great grandchildren. Predeceased by his wife Alma, son Robert, and daughter Susan.

Douglas was born on August 10, 1920 in Glentana, BC (located in the Smithers area) and grew up in the Bulkley Valley. He was the third of six children born to John and Margaret Bateson. He resided in the Smithers area for most of his life, joining the Canadian armed forces in 1939 to fight in World War II. Following the war he returned to the Bulkley Valley and started a career with BC Tel. In 1950 he married Alma Peterson. Douglas loved the outdoors and, above all, he loved and treasured his family.

Douglas celebrated his 95th birthday in August 2015 with a large attendance of family and friends.  Throughout his life he touched the lives and hearts of many. He will be greatly missed by all.

A special thanks to the Northern Health nurses, doctors, home support workers and the Meadows staff for their care, support and concerns for Douglas. A funeral service was held on Sat., Sept. 12th at the Smithers United Church with interment at the Smithers Cemetery.
