Detje ÒDorothyÓ Haayema

Haayema Ð Mrs. Detje “Dorothy” Haayema nee Terpstra passed away Oct. 29, 2003 in the Bulkley Lodge at the age of 91 years.

She was born in Holland in 1912 and as a young girl she worked as a maid for a farmer and this is where she met her husband, Jacob. They were married in 1934 and had eight children, two boys and six girls. One daughter passed away at the age of 11 months. In 1954, they moved to Canada residing in the Lethbridge area of Alberta. In 1956, they moved to Smithers and have lived there ever since. Dorothy loved to knit and crochet for her family. The last two years she lived in the Bulkley Lodge because as her mother had told her: never be a burden to your children.

A funeral service for Mrs. Haayema was held on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2003 in the Bethel Reform Church with Pastor Lev Slagter officiating. Memorial tributes to the Bulkley Lodge in lieu of flowers were requested by the family. Interment was in the Smithers Cemetery.

Beppe is survived by her loving family, son Clarence (Pearl) of Williamsburg, Ontario, Dirk (Willie) of Houston, B.C., Jane (Clarence) Vanderschaaf of Smithers, B.C., Sadie (Joe) Posthuma of Smithers, B.C., Sandra (Andy) Meints of Houston, B.C., 37 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, one sister in Holland, many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by husband Jacob in 2001 and two daughters, Joyce (George) Stad and Janet (Tom) Stad and three grandchildren.

The family would like to thank the Bulkley Lodge for the wonderful care given to Dorothy and a special thank you to Dr. K. Blouw.

Arrangements were entrusted to the R.A. Schrader Funeral Home “Service with Dignity.”
