Bertha Homenuke passed away April 18, 2006, in Smithers.

She is survived by her loving family: husband Steve; sons Al (Maureen), Denys (Gail), Ron, John (Susan); daughter Cindy (Ron); grandchildren Michael, Mark, John, Charmayne, Danielle, Kevin, Alia and Chloe; brother Louis Nelson and sister Edith Davidson.

She was predeceased by mother Anna, father Hjalmar, sisters Cecelia and Mildred.

Bertha was born Feb. 5, 1924, in Winnipeg, Sask, where she was involved in many sports, including speedskating, rugby and basketball to name a few.

While nursing in Lynn Lake, Manitoba, she met Steve. They were married Aug. 2, 1947. After spending seven years in Hazelton, B.C., where Steve worked at the Silver Standard Mine, they moved to Smithers in 1958. Bertha worked as a nurse for a number of years at the Bulkley Valley District Hospital.

Bertha was a very dedicated wife and mother, working tirelessly to meet her family’s needs. She was involved in hockey and figure skating with her children, and was an avid fundraiser for the Central Park Building. Bertha loved to cook and garden, producing prize-winning vegetables at the Fall Fair. She loved to help people in need, always putting others ahead of herself. Bertha also greatly enjoyed socializing with her friends.

Bertha dearly loved her children and grandchildren and was very proud of them. She will be sadly missed.
