SHORTREID - 1923-2006

Lorraine “Babs” Lillian Shortreid passed away on December 4, 2006 in Kamloops BC, at 83 years of age.

She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Fred; son David (Rose) and daughter Pat (Lyle) Munro; grandchildren Marie (Bill) Houston, Terry Munro, John (Audrey) Shortreid, and Bonnie Shortreid; great grandchildren Kim and Trev Houston; and sister Peggy Imredy of Vancouver.

Predeceased by her grandson Dale Munro in 2001.

Babs was born May 25, 1923 to Bill and Mary Lewis in Nanaimo BC. After the death of her father at Trail Island and her mother’s remarriage to John Finnamore, the family went to live on Gabriola Island. In 1937, Mom left school and went to work housekeeping on Gabriola and Vancouver Island. In 1941, her mother was running a boarding house in Parksville and Mom moved there to help her run it. It was there that she met and married Fred Shortreid on February 14, 1942. She always said they didn’t realize it was Valentine’s Day until later.

After a time logging, gardening, and fishing in Parksville, they moved to Clinton and Mom worked at various jobs to add to the family income. Having spent 11 years in Clinton, they moved to Houston BC, where Dad worked in the logging industry. They stayed in Houston for two years and then moved to Smithers where they bought a redi-mix concrete company. In Smithers, Mom was a homemaker, busy looking out for and after the neighbours. After 36 years in Smithers, Mom and Dad relocated to West Pines Villas in Kamloops. Approximately four years later they moved into Kamloops Seniors Village.

The Memorial Service was held at 2:00 pm on Saturday, December 9, 2006 in the Kamloops Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Vern Frudd officiating.

Donations in Bab’s memory may be made to the Marjorie Willoughby Snowden Memorial Hospice House, 72 Whiteshield Crescent South, Kamloops BC V2E 2S9, in lieu of flowers.
