A 52-year-old man was arrested at a house after it suffered major damage from a fire Tuesday night.

Police said the man – whom they have not named – was arrested for an incident which occurred between house occupants earlier in the day. The alleged victim reported the incident after investigators responded to the fire.

The arrested man remains in police custody. The police investigation is ongoing. The scene will be further examined by Terrace RCMP Forensic Identification Section and the fire chief.

The house fire forced the closure of Highway 16 between the Lake Kathlyn Road intersections, southeast of the airport. Nobody was home at the time, according the Smithers RCMP.

Smithers firefighters were called out just before 10:30 p.m. to the home near the Aquabatics building off Hwy 16. A water tanker was brought in to help fight the blaze.
