Lake Kathlyn Elementary School may close

The Bulkley Valley School District activated a 60-day consultation period on closing Lake Kathlyn school. A decision will be made Apr. 12.

The Bulkley Valley School District 54 board decided to activate a 60-day consultation period on closing Lake Kathlyn Elementary School near Smithers at its Tuesday night meeting.

The board said the decision came after continued low enrolment. A final decision will be made at a special meeting at Lake Kathlyn school on Apr. 12 at 6:30 p.m.

District-wide enrolment has declined for several years, which the board said made keeping the school open financially unsustainable.

Public input is being accepted through the district website at sd54.bc.ca by email, or through written submission.
