The proposed French first school in Smithers could move into a school that closed last year.

At June 6’s information session at the Old Church, parents and officials with the Conseil Scolaire Francophone of BC (CFS) met to discuss bringing a French as a first language school to Smithers.

According to Pascale Cyr, spokesperson for CFS, a possible location for the school could be at the former Lake Kathlyn Elementary School, which shuttered its doors last year.

Jason O’Bright, one of the parent organizers to start the French first school, said they have interest from 14-16 parents with children up to six years old.

If the CFS determines that it is feasible to open a school in Smithers, it would likely begin with kindergarten to Grade 1 with a teacher, a part-time principal who would also teach, and a support staff member.

The deadline for the application to be considered by the CFS is Jan. 31, 2018.

Another information session is planned for either October or November.
