UPDATE: No injuries in early morning fire at Smithers homeless encampment

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze; damage isolated to a single tent

A fire broke out this morning (Friday) in a tent at the homeless encampment across from town hall in Smithers.

Smithers Fire Rescue quickly got the blaze under control.

Smithers Mayor Gladys Atrill, who is away at the annual BC Council of Forest Industries (COFI) convention in Vancouver, said she was relieved to hear no one was injured.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation according to the fire department.

Atrill confirmed the fire was isolated to a single tent.

“It’s a bit of a mess now, but anyway, in terms of risk to anyone, that’s all dealt with now and at least no one was hurt,” she said.
