A planned power outage for several communities in the area is scheduled for Sunday, April 21.

BC Hydro is currently replacing, relocating, and strengthening the transmission line tower configuration crossing the Bulkley River located northwest of the community of Telkwa.

River erosion has put a structure on the bank of the Bulkley river at risk of damage during the spring freshet.

For the safety of crews and the public, there will be a planned power outage on April 21 from approximately 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. affecting Telkwa, Smithers, New Hazelton, and Hazelton and reaching as far west as the Hwy 16 and Hwy 37 junction at Kitwanga.

The company said they need to cut the power to ensure the safety of the public and the crews involved as they do the work,

which they say will improve the long-term reliability of the electrical system for the region.

The Bulkley Valley Pool and Recreation Centre will be closed for the day.

The Smithers Alternative Film Society cancelled their event planned for that evening.

Additionally, the Smithers Secondary School’s play Much Ado about Nothing will start slightly later in the evening, as soon as the power returns.
