The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is partnering with ABC Recycling and Red’s Recovery to collect unwanted vehicles in the Hazelton area for free.

Starting the week of May 21, Red’s Recovery will go to the property of community residents who register and haul the vehicles to a central storage area in Hazleton, where ABC Recycling will pick them up for safe disposal.

Kieran Griffith, zero waste coordinator with the Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine, said the initiative was brought forward by a Hazelton representative who noticed an accumulation of old vehicles in the area.

“[The vehicles are] kind of a result of a long time of not having any real disposal options in the area. So it’s just been a buildup of vehicles. As they break down, there’s really nowhere to get rid of them,” said Griffith.

“This was brought up as just a good opportunity to try to get maybe some of them out of there.”

He said the project has been well-received so far and is expected to grow.

“We’ve actually had a pretty good response so far. We are at, I believe, about 15 to 20 vehicles right now. I’m expecting quite a bit more, actually,” said Griffith.

The deadline to register is April 2.

Vehicle release and sign-up forms are available online at rdks.bc.ca, or for paper copies at the Village of Hazelton and District of New Hazelton offices.
