It was a day of fun for kids at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park.

Kids Fish’n Day was held Saturday and there were more activities for kids to partake in than fishing.

Kids rotated to several stations learning fishing skills from shore, by canoe and motorboat. The kids were also taught water safety and arts and crafts, just to name a few.

Liam Dewer was one of the kids at the event and said the most interesting part of the day was learning water safety.

“We’re learning water safety, we got whistles and stickers,” he said.

For sisters Phoebe and Isabelle Frost, they enjoyed going fishing.

‘I caught a fish … it was fun,” Phoebe explained. But both are most excited for the arts and crafts activity.

Organizer of Kids Fish’n Day Eric Smith said the day is all about fishing.

“It’s part of provincial and as well as a national activity to encourage kids to go fishing,” he said.

Smith added there are four different stations for kids to try out.

“We have fishing from shore, fishing from a couple of different boats, we got canoes and a motorboat … The Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue and they’re doing a bunch of water safety stuff to educate kids about how to be safe around water and we have a bunch of art activities related to fishing and fish and nature and that type of thing and then we’ve been playing games as well to build education and awareness about nature, about fishing and get an opportunity for kids to enjoy nature,” said Smith.

Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue member James Unger hopes the kids will have a better understanding of water safety, what equipment they need to have in the boat and to be safe.

“Always wearing a life jacket, you never know when somethings going to happen when you enter the water,” he said.

“Fishing was pretty fun, even though I didn’t catch a fish,” Dewer said.
