High Road is the result of a group of parents coming together in May 2005 with resolve to make a difference in the Smithers area. As their initiative grew, they found that they were being heard from local and provincial levels. These parents initiated a society, and in the spring of 2007 were awarded service contracts for five programs. Their doors opening on June 1, 2007. Services provided include Self Help Smithers, Self Help Houston, Supported Employment, Semi Independent Living, and Adult Residential.

High Road employs over 60 staff and serves 60 individuals with developmental disabilities.

Over the last decade High Road grew immensely with two residential homes added; home-shares (similar to foster care); contracts; and development of social enterprises; IKitchen and Alpine Peak Water Company. Not only does IKitchen and Alpine Peak employ over 20 individuals, it provides skills that go well beyond the kitchen. The funds generated from IKitchen frozen meals go to fair wages paid to all IKitchen and Alpine Peak Water Company staff and programming.

Outside of hiring within their social enterprises, they offer supported employment in the community. A support staff acts as a case manager to provide goal-oriented and individualized supports.

Reported advantages to hiring their individuals include loyalty, reliability, low turnover, sense of diversity and community in the workplace and overall very happy employees. They are focused on growing the network of local businesses whom our individuals work for. Business are encouraged to explore being a part of this program:
