Pharis and Jason Romero are bringing their unique brand of folk music to the Bulkley Valley on April 22.

The British Columbia duo have spent years studying traditional music, Pharis said, which is readily apparent in their performances.

“We sing and play a kind of vintage roots music—folk, blues, country and old-time banjo and guitar—all wrapped in an aesthetic with a love of old guitars, handmade banjos, tight duets and classic songwriting,” she told The Interior News last week.

“We love to create a closeness and respect for the music at hand. During our shows, we sing together into one microphone, talk about the old and new stories behind the songs and move between guitars and banjos taking the instrumental shots.

“As a duet, we like to change it up, from powerful early gospels to gentle ballads.”

All banjos played by the duo are made in their home workshop in Horsefly, B.C., about 300 kilometres south of Prince George.

They released their last album, Long Gone Out West Blues, in February 2013.

The performance is being organized by the Bulkley Valley Folk Music Society.

“I’ve seen this act before a few times and they are really outstanding,” said BVFMS board director Joanne Nugent. “They’re getting a lot of attention and airplay in the larger music scene and we’re still able to afford to bring them here.”

Tickets for the concert, being held at the Della Herman Theatre, are available at Mountain Eagle Books for $20.

It starts at 8 p.m.
